US Girls

The Us Girls programme is designed to increase and sustain young women’s participation in sport and physical activity within some of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities. It originated from StreetGames. Using this initiative and working with other organisations we have tailored delivery towards disadvantaged and vulnerable females within the district to make a difference to their lives. US Girls

US Girls offers a weekly safe space for women and girls with a programme of activities designed by those who attend sessions.

There are two community drop-in sessions for girls aged 12-19. Safe spaces are key alongside positive activities, and planned support in partnership with local trusted organisations. Delivery is equally split between across Burntwood and Lichfield.

US Girls develops friendship groups and tackles social isolation. It aims to increase physical activity, which is known to drop off once girls reach puberty and confronts mental health issues. The spaces provided allow the girls to be themselves and flourish.

How it works:

  • Weekly sessions are delivered in a safe place with positive role models.
  • Input for the activity programme is decided by the girls at the sessions, so programmes are varied and bespoke
  • An incentive scheme is an integral part of the programme and reinforces good attendance.
  • Incentivised group trips motivate participation and teamwork.
  • Access to partner organisations for additional support in group sessions or for individuals to meet personal needs.
  • US Girls Ambassadors are introduced, to support the young women and girls to access the programme and provide role models so that girls feel empowered to do their best.
  • Create a festival “US Girls Rocks” that is designed and led by the girls bringing likeminded people together to celebrate.
